Teaching Kids to Use AI Without Losing Their Minds

Children are already using AI. The more useful question is how. A student can use AI to avoid thinking, or to think more deeply — and the difference is not technological but one of awareness. The goal is to teach children to remain awake while using it.

Whether you believe AI will help humanity or lead to its ultimate downfall, you are right.

Not because both predictions can literally come true in the same way, but because the technology itself does not decide what kind of relationship we build with it.

We do.

And children are already building that relationship.

They are asking AI to explain homework, write stories, answer questions, organize ideas, summarize books, generate images, solve problems, and sometimes simply do the work for them. Most adults are doing some version of the same thing.

That is why I am increasingly less interested in the question of whether children should use AI.

They already are.

The more useful question is how.

A student can use AI to avoid thinking. A student can also use it to think more deeply.

Those two experiences may look surprisingly similar from the outside.

Imagine a child writing a persuasive speech. He could type the assignment into an LLM, copy what appears, and read it aloud without fully understanding it.

Or he could begin with his own position, ask AI to help him organize his points, challenge one of his arguments, suggest a counterargument he has not considered, and then rewrite the final speech in language that still belongs to him.

Same tool. Very different intellectual experience.

The difference is not really technological.

It is a difference in awareness.

Children are growing up with access to systems that can produce answers faster than they can formulate the questions. That creates an unusual educational problem. For generations, teachers could often assume that the work a student submitted represented at least some portion of that student's thinking. That assumption is becoming less reliable.

But I am not sure that policing students more aggressively is the answer.

There will always be another detector, another workaround, another way to disguise machine-generated work.

I would rather teach students to recognize what they are giving away.

When a child asks AI to write something he could have struggled through himself, he is not simply saving time. He may also be skipping the very process that would have helped him develop the skill.

The same is true for adults.

There are tasks we reasonably want machines to take from us. Few people feel spiritually enriched by formatting a spreadsheet or rewriting the same routine email for the tenth time.

But other kinds of difficulty are productive.

Trying to explain an idea and realizing that you cannot quite articulate it yet is productive.

Searching for the right word is productive.

Reading something complicated twice because you did not understand it the first time is productive.

Changing your mind after someone asks a question you had not considered is productive.

These moments can feel inefficient. That does not mean they are unnecessary.

Sometimes the friction is the education.

This is something I think children will need help learning, because AI makes it extraordinarily easy to remove friction before we have asked whether the friction was doing something useful.

So I would like students to develop a habit of asking themselves a few simple questions.

Do I understand what this tool just gave me?

Could I explain it without looking at the screen?

Is AI helping me develop my idea, or has it quietly become the source of the idea?

What part of this work is worth doing myself?

Those are harder questions than "Was AI used?"

They are also much more interesting.

Teachers and parents have a role here too, and children notice our habits more than we sometimes realize.

If adults use AI to avoid every difficult thought, every piece of writing, every moment of uncertainty, children will learn that its purpose is to eliminate effort.

If they see us use it differently, they may learn something else.

They might watch us ask an AI system for possibilities and then reject most of them.

They might hear us say, "That answer sounds convincing, but I do not think it is right."

They might see us verify information.

They might see us close the laptop and continue thinking.

They might hear us say, "I could ask AI to write this for me, but I actually want to figure out what I think first."

That kind of modeling matters.

I also think we should be honest with children about AI's limitations without turning those limitations into a scare campaign.

AI can be confidently wrong. It can flatten nuance. It can reproduce biases contained in its training data. It can generate language that sounds thoughtful before anyone has actually done much thinking.

It can also be astonishingly useful.

It can explain something in five different ways until one finally clicks.

It can help a shy student rehearse an idea before speaking.

It can provide feedback, suggest connections, generate examples, translate difficult language, and open doors into subjects a student might otherwise find intimidating.

There is no contradiction in acknowledging both.

The goal is not to teach children that AI is good.

It is not to teach them that AI is bad.

It is to teach them to remain awake while using it.

That means noticing when convenience becomes dependence.

It means knowing when to accept help and when to tolerate being stuck.

It means remembering that fluency is not the same thing as understanding.

And perhaps most importantly, it means maintaining some ownership over one's own attention and thought.

I suspect this will become one of the defining educational challenges of the next generation.

Children will have access to extraordinary cognitive tools. The question is whether those tools will strengthen their capacity to think or gradually persuade them that thinking is something best outsourced.

I do not think that outcome is predetermined.

Which brings me back to the opening claim.

If we approach AI as something that will inevitably save us, we may surrender too much judgment to it.

If we approach it as something that will inevitably destroy us, we may fail to teach children how to use one of the most powerful tools they will encounter.

But if we understand that our habits, values, and choices shape the relationship, then a different possibility opens.

We can teach children to use AI without disappearing into it.

And perhaps that is where the future is actually decided.
